Auden<\/p>\n<p>As I walked out one evening,<br \/>\nWalking down Bristol Street,<br \/>\nThe crowds upon the pavement<br \/>\nWere fields of harvest wheat.<\/p>\n<p>And down by the brimming river<br \/>\nI heard a lover sing<br \/>\nUnder an arch of the railway:<br \/>\n&#8216;Love has no ending.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I&#8217;ll love you, dear, I&#8217;ll love you<br \/>\nTill China and Africa meet,<br \/>\nAnd the river jumps over the mountain<br \/>\nAnd the salmon sing in the street,<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I&#8217;ll love you till the ocean<br \/>\nIs folded and hung up to dry<br \/>\nAnd the seven stars go squawking<br \/>\nLike geese about the sky.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The years shall run like rabbits,<br \/>\nFor in my arms I hold<br \/>\nThe Flower of the Ages,<br \/>\nAnd the first love of the world.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>But all the clocks in the city<br \/>\nBegan to whirr and chime:<br \/>\n&#8216;O let not Time deceive you,<br \/>\nYou cannot conquer Time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;In the burrows of the Nightmare<br \/>\nWhere Justice naked is,<br \/>\nTime watches from the shadow<br \/>\nAnd coughs when you would kiss.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;In headaches and in worry<br \/>\nVaguely life leaks away,<br \/>\nAnd Time will have his fancy<br \/>\nTo-morrow or to-day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Into many a green valley<br \/>\nDrifts the appalling snow;<br \/>\nTime breaks the threaded dances<br \/>\nAnd the diver&#8217;s brilliant bow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;O plunge your hands in water,<br \/>\nPlunge them in up to the wrist;<br \/>\nStare, stare in the basin<br \/>\nAnd wonder what you&#8217;ve missed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The glacier knocks in the cupboard,<br \/>\nThe desert sighs in the bed,<br \/>\nAnd the crack in the tea-cup opens<br \/>\nA lane to the land of the dead.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Where the beggars raffle the banknotes<br \/>\nAnd the Giant is enchanting to Jack,<br \/>\nAnd the Lily-white Boy is a Roarer,<br \/>\nAnd Jill goes down on her back.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;O look, look in the mirror,<br \/>\nO look in your distress:<br \/>\nLife remains a blessing<br \/>\nAlthough you cannot bless.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;O stand, stand at the window<br \/>\nAs the tears scald and start;<br \/>\nYou shall love your crooked neighbour<br \/>\nWith your crooked heart.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>It was late, late in the evening,<br \/>\nThe lovers they were gone;<br \/>\nThe clocks had ceased their chiming,<br \/>\nAnd the deep river ran on.<\/p>\n<p><em>-Read at St. Lydia&#8217;s on October 23, 2011<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by W.
