No one mentions<br \/>\ncourage.<br \/>\nThe engendering Spirit<br \/>\ndid not enter her without consent.<br \/>\nGod waited.<\/p>\n<p>She was free<br \/>\nto accept or to refuse, choice<br \/>\nintegral to humanness.<\/p>\n<p>____________________________<\/p>\n<p>Aren\u2019t there annunciations<br \/>\nof one sort or another<br \/>\nin most lives?<br \/>\nSome unwillingly<br \/>\nundertake great destinies,<br \/>\nenact them in sullen pride,<br \/>\nuncomprehending.<br \/>\nMore often<br \/>\nthose moments<br \/>\nwhen roads of light and storm<br \/>\nopen from darkness in a man or woman,<br \/>\nare turned away from<br \/>\nin dread, in a wave of weakness, in despair<br \/>\nand with relief.<br \/>\nOrdinary lives continue.<br \/>\nGod does not smite them.<br \/>\nBut the gates close, the pathway vanishes.<\/p>\n<p>______________________________<\/p>\n<p>She had been a child who played, ate, slept<br \/>\nlike any other child \u2013 but unlike others,<br \/>\nwept only for pity, laughed<br \/>\nin joy not triumph.<br \/>\nCompassion and intelligence<br \/>\nfused in her, indivisible.<\/p>\n<p>Called to a destiny more momentous<br \/>\nthan any in all of Time,<br \/>\nshe did not quail,<br \/>\nonly asked<br \/>\na simple, &#8216;How can this be?&#8217;<br \/>\nand\u00a0gravely, courteously,<br \/>\ntook to heart the angel\u2019s reply,<br \/>\nperceiving instantly<br \/>\nthe astounding ministry she was offered:<\/p>\n<p>to bear in her womb<br \/>\nInfinite weight and lightness; to carry<br \/>\nin hidden, finite inwardness,<br \/>\nnine months of Eternity; to contain<br \/>\nin slender vase of being,<br \/>\nthe sum of power \u2013<br \/>\nin narrow flesh,<br \/>\nthe sum of light.<br \/>\nThen bring to birth,<br \/>\npush out into air, a Man-child<br \/>\nneeding, like any other,<br \/>\nmilk and love \u2013<\/p>\n<p>but who was God.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<em>Read at St. Lydia&#8217;s on December 18<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Denise Levertov \u2018Hail, space for the uncontained God\u2019 -From the\u00a0Agathistos\u00a0Hymn,\u00a0Greece,\u00a0VIc We know the scene: the room, variously furnished, almost always a lectern, a book; always the tall lily.
