{"id":1339,"date":"2012-04-12T19:38:14","date_gmt":"2012-04-12T23:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stlydias.org\/blog\/?p=1339"},"modified":"2012-04-12T19:38:14","modified_gmt":"2012-04-12T23:38:14","slug":"white-flowers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stlydiasliturgy.org\/blog\/2012\/04\/white-flowers\/","title":{"rendered":"White Flowers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Mary Oliver<\/p>\n<p>Last night<br \/>\nin the fields<br \/>\nI lay down in the darkness<br \/>\nto think about death,<br \/>\nbut instead I fell asleep,<br \/>\nas if in a vast and sloping room<br \/>\nfilled with those white flowers<br \/>\nthat open all summer,<br \/>\nsticky and untidy,<br \/>\nin the warm fields.<br \/>\nWhen I woke<br \/>\nthe morning light was just slipping<br \/>\nin front of the stars,<br \/>\nand I was covered<br \/>\nwith blossoms.<br \/>\nI don\u2019t know<br \/>\nhow it happened\u2014<br \/>\nI don\u2019t know<br \/>\nif my body went diving down<br \/>\nunder the sugary vines<br \/>\nin some sleep-sharpened affinity<br \/>\nwith the depths, or whether<br \/>\nthat green energy<br \/>\nrose like a wave<br \/>\nand curled over me, claiming me<br \/>\nin its husky arms.<br \/>\nI pushed them away, but I didn\u2019t rise.<br \/>\nNever in my life had I felt so plush,<br \/>\nor so slippery,<br \/>\nor so resplendently empty.<br \/>\nNever in my life<br \/>\nhad I felt myself so near<br \/>\nthat porous line<br \/>\nwhere my own body was done with<br \/>\nand the roots and the stems and the flowers<br \/>\nbegan.<\/p>\n<p><em>-Read at the Great Vigil of Easter on April 7. 2012 at St. Lydia&#8217;s<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Mary Oliver Last night in the fields I lay down in the darkness to think about death, but instead I fell asleep, as if in a vast and sloping room filled with those white flowers that open all summer, sticky and untidy, in the warm fields.
