He replaces,<br \/>\nafter repairing, the nests<br \/>\non their branches, he points every pine north,<br \/>\npolishes the owl\u2019s stained perch,<br \/>\nfeather-dusts the entrance<br \/>\nto the weasel\u2019s burrow, soft-brushes<br \/>\neach chipmunk (the chinchilla<br \/>\nof the forest banal), buffs antlers, gives<br \/>\nsympathy to ragweed, tries to convince\u2014<br \/>\nlike a paternal and inept psychiatrist\u2014<br \/>\nthe lowly garter snake to think<br \/>\nof himself, as he parts the grass,<br \/>\nas an actor parting the stage curtain<br \/>\nto wild applause, arranges, in the clearing,<br \/>\nthe great beams of light\u2026This is his job: a day\u2019s,<br \/>\na week\u2019s, a life\u2019s calm, continuous,<br \/>\nlow-paying devotion.
