(from Leavings)<\/p>\n<p>After the bitter nights<br \/>\nand the gray, cold days<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">comes a bright afternoon.<br \/>\nI go into the creek valley<br \/>\nand there are the horses, the black<br \/>\nand the white, lying in the warm<br \/>\nshine on a bed of dry hay.<br \/>\nThey lie side by side,<br \/>\nidentically posed as a painter<br \/>\nmight imagine them:<br \/>\nheads up, ears and eyes<br \/>\nalert. They are beautiful in the light<br \/>\nand in the warmth happy. Such<br \/>\nharmonies are rare. This is<br \/>\nnot the way the world<br \/>\nis. It is a possibility<br \/>\nnonetheless deeply seeded<br \/>\nwithin the world.
