My poor students, all I ask of them
\nis to grow antennae, lie down with lava
\nand rise with snow, grow tongues from
\ntheir math assignments and no, Melissa,<\/p>\n
your mother won\u2019t approve of the bioluminescent
\nsmear on your communion dress. The world fidgets
\nin uneasy relationship to our statements
\nabout it nevertheless producing silver<\/p>\n
buds from ragged limbs like the luster
\nin late Frank Sinatra songs. Finally,
\nwhen I got off the sixth floor, I felt
\nlike I was walking out into the sky<\/p>\n
and aren\u2019t we all pedestrians of air?
\nDoesn\u2019t it feel all wrong to turn our backs
\non the ocean? On an ant? On those Chagall
\nwindows you have to go through a gauntlet<\/p>\n
of ancient armor to get to? What was her name,
\nthat night nurse so deft her blood draws
\ndidn\u2019t wake me up? Don\u2019t get me wrong, I want
\nto wake up. I want my old dog to show me<\/p>\n
all that wolf-light she hides inside
\neven though she thinks I won\u2019t understand,
\neven though her vet and I conspire
\nto keep her alive forever.<\/p>\n
