It helps, now and then, to step back and take a long view.<\/p>\n
The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts,
\nit is even beyond our vision.<\/p>\n
We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction
\nof the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work.
\nNothing we do is complete, which is a way of saying
\nthat the kingdom always lies beyond us.
\nNo statement says all that could be said.
\nNo prayer fully expresses our faith.
\nNo confession brings perfection.
\nNo pastoral visit brings wholeness.
\nNo program accomplishes the church’s mission.
\nNo set of goals and objectives includes everything.<\/p>\n
This is what we are about.
\nWe plant the seeds that one day will grow.
\nWe water seeds already planted,
\nknowing that they hold future promise.<\/p>\n
We lay foundations that will need further development.
\nWe provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabilities.<\/p>\n
We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation
\nin realizing that. This enables us to do something,
\nand to do it very well. It may be incomplete,
\nbut it is a beginning, a step along the way,
\nan opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and do the rest.<\/p>\n
We may never see the end results, but that is the difference
\nbetween the master builder and the worker.<\/p>\n
We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs.
\nWe are prophets of a future not our own.
\nAmen.<\/p>\n
