{"id":309,"date":"2010-10-20T12:57:44","date_gmt":"2010-10-20T16:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stlydias.org\/blog\/?p=309"},"modified":"2010-10-20T13:16:43","modified_gmt":"2010-10-20T17:16:43","slug":"filling-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stlydiasliturgy.org\/blog\/2010\/10\/filling-station\/","title":{"rendered":"Filling Station"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">by Elizabeth Bishop<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Oh, but it is dirty!<br \/>\n\u2014this little filling station,<br \/>\noil-soaked, oil-permeated<br \/>\nto a disturbing, over-all<br \/>\nblack translucency.<br \/>\nBe careful with that match!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Father wears a dirty,<br \/>\noil-soaked monkey suit<br \/>\nthat cuts him under the arms,<br \/>\nand several quick and saucy<br \/>\nand greasy sons assist him<br \/>\n(it\u2019s a family filling station),<br \/>\nall quite thoroughly dirty.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Do they live in the station?<br \/>\nIt has a cement porch<br \/>\nbehind the pumps, and on it<br \/>\na set of crushed and grease-<br \/>\nimpregnated wickerwork;<br \/>\non the wicker sofa<br \/>\na dirty dog, quite comfy.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Some comic books provide<br \/>\nthe only note of color\u2014<br \/>\nof certain color. They lie<br \/>\nupon a big dim doily<br \/>\ndraping a taboret<br \/>\n(part of the set), beside<br \/>\na big hirsute begonia.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Why the extraneous plant?<br \/>\nWhy the taboret?<br \/>\nWhy, oh why, the doily?<br \/>\n(Embroidered in daisy stitch<br \/>\nwith marguerites, I think,<br \/>\nand heavy with gray crochet.)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Somebody embroidered the doily.<br \/>\nSomebody waters the plant,<br \/>\nor oils it, maybe.
