There is<br \/>\none very small one I love<br \/>\nso much I have taken it everywhere,<br \/>\neven with its loose switch.<br \/>\nOn its porcelain shade are painted<br \/>\ntiny red flowers, cleary<br \/>\nby someone whose careful<br \/>\nhand we will never know.<br \/>\nBecause its Lamp Day I&#8217;m trying<br \/>\nto remember where I got it,<br \/>\nmaybe it was waiting for me<br \/>\nin the house on Summer Street<br \/>\nI moved into almost exactly<br \/>\n17 years ago.\u00a0 I think<br \/>\nwithout thinking I just picked it<br \/>\nup from the floor and put it<br \/>\non my desk and plugged<br \/>\nit into the socket and already<br \/>\nI was working.\u00a0 So much<br \/>\nsince that moment has happened.<br \/>\nOn Lamp Day we try<br \/>\nnot dreamily but systematically<br \/>\nto remember it all.\u00a0 I do it<br \/>\nby thinking about the hidden<br \/>\nreasons I love something<br \/>\nsmall. When you take<br \/>\na series of careful steps<br \/>\nto solve a complex problem,<br \/>\nmathematicians call it an algorithm.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s like moving through<br \/>\na series of rooms, each with<br \/>\ntwo doors, you must choose one,<br \/>\nyou can&#8217;t go back. I begin<br \/>\nby sitting on a bench in the sun<br \/>\non September 21st thinking<br \/>\nall the walks I have taken<br \/>\nin all the cities I have chosen<br \/>\nto live in or visit with loved ones<br \/>\nand alone make a sunlit<br \/>\nand rainy map no one<br \/>\nwill ever be able to hold.<br \/>\nIs this important?\u00a0 Yes and no.<br \/>\nNow I am staring<br \/>\nat clean metal girders.<br \/>\nPeople keep walking past<br \/>\na hotel, its bright<br \/>\nglass calmly reflecting<br \/>\neverything bad and good.<br \/>\nBlue boots.\u00a0 Bright glass.<br \/>\nGuests in this moment. A child<br \/>\nthrough the puddles steps<br \/>\nexuberant, clearly feeling the power.<br \/>\nI am plugged in.\u00a0 I am calm.<br \/>\nLamp Day has a name.<br \/>\nJust like this cup<br \/>\nthat has somehow drifted<br \/>\ninto my life, and towards which<br \/>\nsometimes for its own reasons<br \/>\nmy hand drifts in turn.<br \/>\nUpon it is written the single<br \/>\nword Omaha.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<em>Read at St. Lydia&#8217;s on October 24<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Matthew Zapruder All day I&#8217;ve felt today is a holiday, but the calendar is blank.
