{"id":770,"date":"2011-06-02T12:24:36","date_gmt":"2011-06-02T16:24:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stlydias.org\/blog\/?p=770"},"modified":"2011-06-02T12:24:36","modified_gmt":"2011-06-02T16:24:36","slug":"an-arundel-tomb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stlydiasliturgy.org\/blog\/2011\/06\/an-arundel-tomb\/","title":{"rendered":"An Arundel Tomb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Philip Larkin<\/p>\n<p>Side by side, their faces blurred,<br \/>\nThe earl and countess lie in stone,<br \/>\nTheir proper habits vaguely shown<br \/>\nAs jointed armour, stiffened pleat,<br \/>\nAnd that faint hint of the absurd \u2014<br \/>\nThe little dogs under their feet.<\/p>\n<p>Such plainness of the pre-baroque<br \/>\nHardly involves the eye, until<br \/>\nIt meets his left-hand gauntlet, still<br \/>\nClasped empty in the other; and<br \/>\nOne sees, with a sharp tender shock,<br \/>\nHis hand withdrawn, holding her hand.<\/p>\n<p>They would not think to lie so long.<br \/>\nSuch faithfulness in effigy<br \/>\nWas just a detail friends would see:<br \/>\nA sculptor\u2019s sweet commissioned grace<br \/>\nThrown off in helping to prolong<br \/>\nThe Latin names around the base.<\/p>\n<p>They would not guess how early in<br \/>\nTheir supine stationary voyage<br \/>\nThe air would change to soundless damage,<br \/>\nTurn the old tenantry away;<br \/>\nHow soon succeeding eyes begin<br \/>\nTo look, not read. Rigidly they<\/p>\n<p><!--#include file=\"m63-article-related-attachements.html\"--> <!-- Call Wide Article Attachment Module --> <!--TEMPLATE:call file=\"wideArticleAttachment.jsp\" \/-->Persisted, linked, through lengths and breadths<br \/>\nOf time. Snow fell, undated. Light<br \/>\nEach summer thronged the glass. A bright<br \/>\nLitter of birdcalls strewed the same<br \/>\nBone-riddled ground. And up the paths<br \/>\nThe endless altered people came,<\/p>\n<p>Washing at their identity.<br \/>\nNow, helpless in the hollow of<br \/>\nAn unarmorial age, a trough<br \/>\nOf smoke in slow suspended skeins<br \/>\nAbove their scrap of history,<br \/>\nOnly an attitude remains:<\/p>\n<p>Time has transfigured them into<br \/>\nUntruth.
